Adenauer
Konrad Adenauer (1876–1967) was a German statesman who led West Germany as its first postwar chancellor from 1949 to 1963 and served as the long-time head of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). Born in Cologne, he studied law and pursued a political career, becoming mayor of Cologne from 1917 to 1933. The rise of the Nazi regime ended his municipal leadership, and after World War II he helped reestablish democratic governance in Germany and shape the CDU as a major postwar party.
