Furthermore, it allows individuals to transmit this data to another data controller without hindrance from the original controller, provided that the processing is based on consent or on a contract and is carried out by automated means.

This right is designed to empower individuals by giving them greater control over their personal information. It facilitates the easy transfer of data between different service providers, fostering competition and innovation. For example, a user could download their social media profile data and easily upload it to a competing platform. The data must be provided in a format that allows for easy reuse and processing by another entity. This generally means common file formats like CSV, JSON, or XML. The GDPR specifies that the portability right applies to personal data that the individual has provided, and it does not extend to data inferred or generated by the controller.
