Adaptálásában, or "adaptation" in Hungarian, refers to the process by which organisms, populations, or species adjust to changes in their environment to enhance their survival and reproductive success. This biological concept is a fundamental principle in evolutionary biology, describing how traits become more common in a population when they confer advantages under specific conditions.

The process of adaptation occurs through natural selection, where individuals with heritable traits that improve fitness—such as resistance to disease, better camouflage, or increased efficiency in resource use—are more likely to survive and reproduce. Over generations, these beneficial traits become prevalent in the population. Adaptations can be morphological (physical changes), physiological (functional adjustments), behavioral (changes in actions or responses), or developmental (modifications in growth patterns).

Adaptations are often context-dependent, meaning they may vary across different environments. For example, animals in colder climates may develop thicker fur or fat layers, while those in arid regions might evolve mechanisms to conserve water. Some adaptations are universal, such as the ability of many species to respond to seasonal changes, while others are highly specialized, like the echolocation used by bats or the venom of certain snakes.

In human contexts, adaptation can also refer to psychological or cultural adjustments, such as coping strategies in response to stress or societal changes. However, in a biological sense, adaptation is a long-term evolutionary process driven by genetic variation and environmental pressures. It contrasts with acclimatization, which is a short-term physiological adjustment that does not involve genetic changes.

Adaptation remains a key area of study in ecology and evolutionary biology, helping scientists understand how species interact with their environments and how biodiversity is maintained over time.
