Acetalisaatiossa, which translates to acetalization in English, is a chemical reaction where an alcohol reacts with an aldehyde or ketone to form an acetal or ketal, respectively. This process typically involves an acid catalyst and the removal of water, which is a byproduct of the reaction. The formation of acetals and ketals is a reversible reaction.

Acetalization is a valuable synthetic tool in organic chemistry. Acetals and ketals are often used as protecting groups for carbonyl compounds (aldehydes and ketones). The carbonyl group is reactive and can interfere with reactions occurring elsewhere in a molecule. By converting the aldehyde or ketone into an acetal or ketal, its reactivity is temporarily masked. This protection can be maintained under various reaction conditions, such as basic or nucleophilic environments, where the unprotected carbonyl group would react.
