Absaroka

Absaroka is a name used for a mountain range in the northern Rocky Mountains, located in northwestern Wyoming and southern Montana. The range runs roughly north–south for about 60 miles (100 km) and lies to the east of Yellowstone National Park, forming a rugged backdrop around Cody, Wyoming.

The Absaroka Range is part of the larger Absaroka volcanic field, composed mainly of volcanic rocks formed during the early Eocene epoch, roughly 50 million years ago. The landscape consists of steep ridges and high peaks, with rock types including andesite to rhyolite, and extensive volcanic tuff beds.

Name and people: The name Absaroka is derived from the Crow language and has historically been associated with the Crow people who inhabited the region; the term is often used in reference to that area and its Indigenous history.

Conservation and area: Much of the Absaroka Range lies within national forest land, and the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness spans portions of Montana and Wyoming, preserving much of the range's rugged character. The wilderness was designated in 1964.

In popular culture: Absaroka County is a fictional jurisdiction in the TV series Longmire, set in Wyoming.
