Aboyne

Aboyne is a village and historic parish in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It lies on the River Dean on Deeside, within the Cairngorms National Park area, about 40 miles west of Aberdeen along the A93 road. The surrounding area is rural, with agricultural land and access to hill country.

The parish includes several surrounding hamlets and has long been associated with the Deeside region. The village developed as an agricultural market and service center for the Deeside valley in the 18th and 19th centuries. Its railway station on the Deeside Line served the village from the 1850s until closure in 1966, after which the route was converted to the Deeside Way, a long-distance path for walkers and cyclists that links Aberdeen with Ballater.

Aboyne is known for Aboyne Castle, a historic seat linked to the local Gordon family, and for the annual Aboyne Highland Games, a traditional Scottish event attracting visitors from the region and beyond. The community supports the arts, sports, and outdoor recreation, with the Deeside countryside popular for hiking, fishing, and shooting.

Education in Aboyne is provided by Aboyne Academy, the secondary school serving the Deeside area, with primary education available in Aboyne and nearby villages. Administratively, Aboyne lies within Aberdeenshire Council and forms part of the historic county of Aberdeenshire.
