Ablagerungsmechanismen, also known as depositional mechanisms, describe the geological processes by which sediments are transported and accumulate in specific locations. These mechanisms are fundamental to understanding the formation of sedimentary rocks and the interpretation of Earth's history.

One primary mechanism is suspension, where fine particles like clay and silt are carried within a fluid (water or air) and settle out when the fluid velocity decreases. Another key process is saltation, which involves the bouncing or hopping of larger sediment grains along a surface, typically driven by wind or water currents. Traction, or creep, describes the rolling or sliding of the largest sediment particles along the bed, often occurring in high-energy environments.

Solution transport is another important mechanism, particularly for dissolved minerals. These are carried in a dissolved state within water and can precipitate out to form chemical sedimentary rocks when conditions change, such as evaporation or supersaturation. Organic matter can also be deposited, forming biogenic sediments when organisms die and their remains accumulate.

The specific depositional mechanisms at play are largely determined by the energy of the transporting medium, the size and density of the sediment particles, and the characteristics of the depositional environment, such as rivers, lakes, oceans, or deserts. Understanding these mechanisms is crucial for geologists to reconstruct past environmental conditions and predict the distribution of geological resources.
