Abfallnummern

Abfallnummern, also known as waste codes or European Waste Catalogue (EWC) codes, are a standardized system used in the European Union to classify and manage different types of waste. This system ensures consistent identification and tracking of waste materials across member states, facilitating proper disposal, recycling, and hazardous waste management. Each Abfallnummer is a six-digit code, with the first two digits representing the chapter, the next two the specific waste type, and the last two indicating a sub-category.

The EWC is divided into 20 chapters, covering a broad spectrum of waste origins, from agricultural and food industry waste to municipal waste and waste from electrical and electronic equipment. For example, codes starting with 01 typically relate to waste from exploration, mining, quarrying, and physical and chemical processing of minerals. Codes starting with 19 usually pertain to waste from waste management facilities, off-site waste water treatment plants, and the preparation of food and beverages.

Certain Abfallnummern are designated as hazardous waste, indicated by an asterisk (*). These wastes require special handling and disposal procedures due to their potential risks to human health and the environment. The classification helps authorities monitor the movement and treatment of hazardous substances, preventing illegal dumping and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. Businesses generating waste are responsible for correctly assigning the appropriate Abfallnummer to their waste streams for proper documentation and disposal.
