AbdusSattar

Abdus Sattar is a Bangladeshi politician who held the position of President of Bangladesh from 1977 to 1981. Born on October 6, 1906, in Calcutta, British India, Sattar belonged to the Awami League, a prominent political party in Bangladesh. He pursued his early education in Calcutta and later studied at the University of Dhaka, where he earned a degree in law.

Sattar entered politics in the early 20th century and became a prominent figure in the Muslim League, a dominant party in Pakistan. After earning his degree, he worked as a lawyer and became a member of the East Pakistan Provincial assembly in 1946. Following Bangladesh's independence in 1971, Sattar was elected as a member of the first Jatiya Sangsad of Bangladesh.

In 1977, Sattar was elected as the President of Bangladesh, serving two consecutive terms until 1981. During his tenure, he faced significant challenges, including a domestic economic crisis and international pressure from Pakistan following Bangladesh's independence. Sattar's administration saw significant investment in social infrastructure, such as construction of roads, schools, and hospitals.

Abdus Sattar died on August 5, 1985, in Dhaka. His legacy remains a topic of discussion among Bangladeshi historians and scholars, with some viewing him as a transition figure between the country's liberation and its early years of nation-building, and others criticizing his policies as ineffective in addressing the domestic and international challenges facing the young nation.
