Dhaka

Dhaka is the capital and largest city of Bangladesh, located on the eastern bank of the Buriganga River in central parts of the country. It functions as the political, economic, and cultural hub of Bangladesh and forms the core of Dhaka Division and Dhaka District. The metropolitan area is among the world’s most populous, with millions of residents in its urban agglomeration.

The area has roots as a trading settlement along river networks. Under the Mughal Empire it became Jahangir Nagar, the capital of Bengal under the nawabs. It acquired the name Dhaka in the 17th or 18th century. In the British period it remained a major urban center and later served as the capital of East Pakistan from 1954 to 1971. After independence in 1971 it became the capital of Bangladesh.

Economically, Dhaka is the nation’s primary commercial and financial center. It hosts government institutions, many multinational firms, the garment and textile industries, and services. The city is served by Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and by river and rail links, though traffic congestion and pollution are ongoing challenges.

Culturally, Dhaka is noted for historic sites such as Lalbagh Fort and Ahsan Manzil, as well as modern landmarks like the National Parliament Building. The University of Dhaka and other institutions anchor higher education. The city supports a diverse religious and ethnic mix and a rich Bengali culinary scene.

Dhaka experiences a tropical monsoon climate, with hot summers, a pronounced rainy season, and mild winters.
