Aatomites are a hypothetical class of nanoscale crystalline aggregates proposed in theoretical discussions of atomic cluster chemistry. They are imagined to consist of tightly bound assemblies of atoms arranged in lattice-like motifs with dimensions of a few nanometers. In these concepts, aatomites exhibit distinct electronic and optical properties arising from quantum confinement and surface states, differentiating them from ordinary nanoparticles.

The term combines an allusion to atomic structure with the suffix -ite, a convention used for minerals and nanoscale materials. The concept appears mainly in speculative literature and thought experiments; to date there is no confirmed experimental synthesis or characterization of aatomites in mainstream laboratories.

Proposed structures in the literature include layered sheets and cage-like clusters, with variable composition. Reported ideas suggest high surface area, tunable band gaps, and potential catalytic activity, depending on composition and bonding networks. Stability is a central question, as predicted networks must resist coalescence and oxidation under ambient conditions.

Synthesis challenges include achieving precise atomic arrangement, preventing agglomeration, and developing reliable characterization at sub-nanometer scales. Researchers emphasize that, without experimental confirmation, aatomites remain a theoretical construct rather than a demonstrated material class.

If realized, potential applications could span catalysis, energy storage, sensors, and quantum devices, but practical realization would require advances in synthesis, stabilization, and measurement techniques.
