Aantal

Aantal is a Dutch noun meaning number, count, or quantity. It refers to how many items are present or how many occurrences exist within a set. As a grammatical unit, it is usually used with the definite article het (het aantal) and can express both the size of a group and the count of items. The common phrase het aantal is used to introduce a counted quantity, as in Het aantal inwoners is gestegen.

The expression een aantal means a number of or several and is followed by a plural noun; for example Een aantal inwoners heeft deelgenomen aan de enquête. In general, aantallen (plural) refer to multiple separate counts, whereas een aantal emphasizes a portion of a larger whole.

In statistical and data contexts, aantallen are the discrete counts reported for populations, events, or items, such as het aantal respondenten or het totaal aantal verkochte producten. Aantal is distinct from hoeveelheid, which covers the amount of uncountable quantities, and from getal, which is a more general term for a number.
