Aamalida

Aamalida is a fictional coastal city-state in the archipelago of the Serene Reach, prominent in maritime trade and culture. Located on the southern shore of Kaelith, it sits at the confluence of major sea lanes and inland river routes. The harbor is natural and well-sheltered, with limestone cliffs and mangrove flats shaping the coastline.

The settlement that would become Aamalida emerged around the 6th century as a trading post among raiding and farming communities. It grew into a city-state after a merchant coalition established a formal council known as the Steward's Assembly. The city prospered through spice, timber, and pearl trade, while maintaining neutrality during regional conflicts.

Aamalida is governed by an oligarchic council of the wealthiest merchant houses, elected for limited terms. The Steward presides over the Assembly and acts as chief magistrate. Local governance emphasizes tradition, but reforms have expanded port security and tax collection. The port handles most regional trade, with shipyards building and repairing vessels of various sizes. Principal exports include spices, coconuts, and textiles; fishing and pearl harvesting provide steady income.

Aamalidan is the language of the city, with regional dialects. Festivals include the Night of Lanterns and the Tide Market. Music blends string, wind, and percussion traditions. Landmarks include the Lantern Gate, Market of Echoes, Temple of the Sea, and the Old Harbor Wall.
