AVLB

AVLB stands for Armored Vehicle Launched Bridge. It is a class of armored combat support vehicles whose primary function is to deploy a bridge across an obstacle to enable armored and mechanized units to maintain momentum on the battlefield. The vehicle carries a prefabricated bridge and a launcher system that positions the bridge across the gap, allowing troops and vehicles to cross without exposing crews to enemy fire.

Most AVLBs are built on the chassis of a main battle tank or an armored fighting vehicle, which provides protection, mobility, and compatibility with front-line formations. When deployed, the vehicle halts near the obstacle, stabilizes, and the bridge is extended or launched over the gap. The bridge typically remains anchored to both banks to bear the load of crossing vehicles, after which units can move across and the bridge is recovered or relocated for reuse. Some designs employ modular or adjustable-length bridges to handle different gap widths and loading requirements.

Crew and operations are coordinated by a small team within an engineer or support unit. Typical roles include a driver, a vehicle commander, and a bridge operator who controls the launch and connection process. The system is designed to enable rapid crossing under varying battlefield conditions and to complement other engineering assets.

AVLBs are fielded by several modern armed forces and are valued for preserving mobility and tempo in operations where rivers, trenches, or other obstacles would otherwise impede advancement. Limitations include the need for suitable approach and exit points, exposure during deployment, fixed bridge length and load limits, and the requirement for favorable weather and terrain to ensure safe operation.
