ATuins

The Atuins are a fictional species appearing in the science fiction novel "The Left Hand of Darkness" by Ursula K. Le Guin. They are one of the dominant intelligent species on the planet Gethen, also known as Winter. The Atuins are humanoid in appearance, though they possess a number of distinct physiological and cultural differences from humans. Their most striking characteristic is their androgyny. Atuins are hermaphroditic, possessing both male and female sexual organs, which become active only during a period of monthly sexual receptivity called "kemmer." During kemmer, an Atuin may adopt a male or female role.

Atuin society is organized into a number of nation-states, such as Karhide and Orgoreyn, each with its own distinct political structure and cultural norms. These societies are often feudal or bureaucratic. The novel explores themes of gender, sexuality, communication, and political intrigue through the interactions of the protagonist, Genly Ai, a human envoy, with the Atuins. Their unique biology influences their social structures, their understanding of relationships, and their approach to conflict. The Atuins' environment, characterized by extreme cold, has also shaped their resilience and their technological development.
