When you download an app from the Google Play Store, the process happens automatically in the background, and you don't typically see the APK file itself. However, it is possible to download APK files directly from websites or other sources outside of official app stores. Installing an app from an APK file is often referred to as "sideloading."

While sideloading can be useful for installing apps not available in your region or for developers testing their applications, it also carries security risks. APK files from untrusted sources may contain malware or viruses that could compromise your device's security or steal personal information. Therefore, it is generally recommended to only download APK files from reputable sources.

The APK file is essentially a ZIP archive, and its contents can be viewed or extracted using standard ZIP decompression tools. This allows for inspection of the app's structure, though understanding the compiled code within is more complex. The manifest file within the APK, typically named `AndroidManifest.xml`, is crucial as it declares the app's components, permissions, and hardware and software features it requires.
