ANSI escapesequences, also known as ANSI escape codes, are a standardized set of characters used to control formatting, cursor movement, and other operations within text-based interfaces, particularly in terminal emulators. These sequences begin with the escape character (ASCII 27, often represented as "\033" or "\x1b") followed by a left bracket "[" and then a command.

The most common use of ANSI escapesequences is for text formatting. By inserting specific codes, users can change the color of text and background, make text bold, italic, underlined, or strike-through. For example, the sequence "\033[31m" sets the text color to red, while "\033[0m" resets all formatting to default.

Beyond formatting, ANSI escapesequences allow for cursor manipulation. Commands exist to move the cursor to specific row and column positions, clear the screen or parts of it, and save or restore the cursor's position. This enables dynamic and interactive text-based applications.

While originally developed for the ANSI standard, these sequences have become widely adopted by most modern terminal emulators on various operating systems, including Linux, macOS, and Windows. Their widespread support makes them a ubiquitous tool for enhancing the presentation and interactivity of command-line applications and scripts.
