AMradiotoiminnassa refers to the operation of Amplitude Modulation radio. This is a method of transmitting information, most commonly audio signals, by modulating the amplitude of a carrier wave. In simple terms, the strength or amplitude of the radio wave is varied in accordance with the signal being transmitted.

This technology was one of the earliest forms of radio broadcasting and played a significant role in the development of mass communication. AM signals are susceptible to atmospheric noise and electrical interference, which can result in static and distortion. However, AM waves can travel long distances, particularly at night when the ionosphere is more reflective. This characteristic made it ideal for early long-range broadcasting.

The bandwidth required for AM transmission is relatively narrow, meaning more stations can broadcast within a given frequency range compared to other modulation techniques. AM radio operates on different frequency bands, including the Medium Frequency (MF) band, commonly used for domestic broadcasting. The process involves a transmitter that combines the audio signal with a high-frequency carrier wave, altering the latter's amplitude. A receiver then demodulates this signal, extracting the original audio information. Despite the advent of more advanced technologies like FM and digital broadcasting, AM radio continues to be used for news, talk radio, and in specific applications where its long-range capabilities are advantageous.
