AMradiokanavat refers to radio stations that broadcast using Amplitude Modulation (AM) technology. AM is one of the oldest and most basic forms of radio transmission, where the amplitude, or strength, of the carrier wave is varied to encode audio information. This contrasts with Frequency Modulation (FM), where the frequency of the carrier wave is altered.

AM radio signals can travel much longer distances than FM signals, especially at night, due to their ability to bounce off the ionosphere. This characteristic has historically made AM radio crucial for long-distance communication and broadcasting. However, AM transmissions are more susceptible to static and interference from electrical noise and atmospheric conditions.

In many countries, AM radio is still widely used, particularly for news, talk radio, and sports programming. While FM radio generally offers higher fidelity sound, the extensive reach of AM has ensured its continued relevance. The digital revolution has also seen some AM stations transition to digital broadcasting standards, offering improved sound quality and more efficient spectrum usage.
