ABS sensorer, also known as wheel speed sensors, are crucial components of an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) in vehicles. Their primary function is to monitor the rotational speed of each individual wheel. This information is continuously fed to the ABS control module. The ABS module then analyzes this data to detect if any wheel is locking up or spinning too fast during braking.

When a wheel sensor detects that a wheel is about to lock, it signals the ABS control module. The module then rapidly modulates the brake pressure to that specific wheel, releasing and reapplying the brake force in very short intervals. This prevents the wheel from locking up completely, allowing the driver to maintain steering control and often reducing stopping distances.

There are typically two main types of ABS sensors: passive and active. Passive sensors, often Hall effect sensors, generate a voltage signal that varies with wheel speed. Active sensors, on the other hand, require a power supply and provide a digital signal that is less susceptible to electromagnetic interference.

A malfunctioning ABS sensor can lead to the ABS warning light illuminating on the dashboard. This can indicate issues such as a faulty sensor, a damaged tone ring (which the sensor reads), or wiring problems. In many modern vehicles, these sensors also play a role in other electronic systems, such as traction control and electronic stability control.
