ABSsensoren

ABSsensoren, also known as anti-lock braking system sensors, are crucial components in modern vehicles. Their primary function is to monitor the speed of each wheel. This information is then transmitted to the ABS control module, which uses it to prevent wheel lock-up during hard braking. By detecting if a wheel is rotating significantly slower than the others, or if it has stopped rotating altogether, the ABS system can intervene.

When the ABS sensor detects a potential lock-up, it signals the hydraulic control unit. This unit then momentarily reduces the braking pressure to the affected wheel, allowing it to regain traction and continue rotating. This process is repeated rapidly, creating a pulsating sensation felt in the brake pedal, but it significantly improves steering control and reduces stopping distances, especially on slippery surfaces.

There are two main types of ABS sensors: passive and active. Passive sensors, often Hall effect sensors or variable reluctance sensors, generate their own voltage signal in response to the rotation of a toothed ring or magnet attached to the wheel hub. Active sensors, on the other hand, are powered by the vehicle's electrical system and typically use a magnet and a semiconductor element to produce a more precise digital signal. Regardless of the type, a malfunctioning ABS sensor can lead to the deactivation of the ABS system, often indicated by a warning light on the dashboard.
