ABMM

ABMM stands for the Association for the Advancement of Biomedical Modeling and Metrics, a nonprofit professional organization founded in 1998 to promote high‑quality computational modeling and data standards in biomedical research. The association was established by a coalition of academic scientists, industry engineers, and government researchers who recognized the growing need for interoperable models that could be shared across institutions and used to predict disease progression, drug responses, and public health outcomes.

ABMM’s primary mission is to develop and endorse standards for model construction, annotation, and verification, enabling reproducibility and transparency. The organization maintains an annual conference that attracts more than 1,200 participants from universities, pharmaceutical companies, and regulatory agencies. In addition to the conference, ABMM publishes a peer‑reviewed journal, hosts workshops on model‑based systems biology, and provides a digital repository where models are curated under the Model Sharing Initiative.

Membership is open to individuals and organizations that contribute to the field of biomedical modeling. Members enjoy access to the association’s library of tools, funding announcements, and networking forums. ABMM is governed by a board of directors elected by the membership; the board sets strategic priorities and appoints committees to oversee technical standards, training, and outreach.

Key achievements include the creation of the ABMM Ontology, a controlled vocabulary that harmonizes terms across model types, and the launch of the Model Validation Pipeline, which offers automated checks for structural and functional integrity. Through its education programs and policy advocacy, ABMM has influenced several national research agendas, ensuring that computational modeling remains a central pillar in modern biomedical science.
