A283

ASTM A283 is a standard specification published by ASTM International for carbon steel plates with low to intermediate tensile strengths used in general structural applications. It covers hot-rolled plates in four grades, designated A, B, C, and D, each with specific chemical composition limits and mechanical-property requirements that address yield and tensile strength as well as elongation, depending on thickness and grade. The standard is available in both inch-pound (A283) and metric (A283M) forms.

The specification outlines acceptable chemical compositions for elements such as carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, and silicon, along with the corresponding mechanical properties that the finished plates must meet. It also describes testing methods and the general quality assurance measures required for production and inspection. The plates are typically supplied in standard thickness ranges appropriate for general structural use.

A283 plates are commonly chosen for projects where welding and fabrication ease are important and exceptionally high strength is not needed. They are widely used in construction and manufacturing for noncritical structural components, equipment housings, and similar applications where cost efficiency and formability are advantageous. While A283 is a common alternative to higher-strength structural steels, it is not intended for critical load-bearing parts or environments requiring high strength, hardness, or corrosion resistance.
