The term is used to describe strategies that leverage the protective functions of A1M to mitigate cellular damage caused by oxidative stress and related conditions.

Alpha-1-microglobulin, also known as A1M, is produced primarily by the liver and is found in blood plasma and various tissues. It can bind heme and scavenge reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, contributing to cellular protection under oxidative stress. These biochemical activities underpin the rationale for developing A1M-based interventions aimed at reducing tissue injury in settings of inflammation, toxin exposure, or high oxidative burden.

In biomedicine, A1M-based strategies encompass recombinant or formulated forms of A1M, as well as derivatives designed to improve stability, pharmacokinetics, or tissue targeting.
