Scope and applicability: The standard covers a broad range of equipment including information technology equipment, audio/video equipment, and multimedia devices that are typically powered from AC mains or other energy sources and used by consumers and professionals. It applies throughout the product life cycle, from design through end-use and service.

Approach: 62368-1 requires a hazard analysis and risk assessment to identify potential hazards across energy sources, electrical and mechanical systems, thermal and fire hazards, chemical hazards, radiation, and other risks. Designers must implement controls to eliminate or mitigate hazards and document these decisions. The standard emphasizes eliminating hazards through design as the primary strategy, with protective measures considered where active controls are needed.

Certification and adoption: Products meeting 62368-1 may bear corresponding certifications (for example, UL 62368-1 in the United States, EN 62368-1 in Europe). Adoption has progressed at different rates by region, with many manufacturers using 62368-1 to market equipment internationally, ensuring a harmonized baseline for safety across IT and AV devices.
