576p is a standard-definition video format defined by a vertical resolution of 576 lines and progressive scanning, in contrast to the interlaced 576i used in PAL and SECAM broadcasting. The progressive nature means each frame is drawn in a single pass, which can improve motion reproduction on progressive-display devices.

Common digital representations of 576p use 720x576 pixels, the width used in ITU-R BT.601 digital SD representations; 704x576 is also encountered, particularly when preserving a 4:3 or 16:9 aspect with non-square pixels. The visible aspect ratio depends on the pixel aspect ratio and any letterboxing or pillarboxing applied.

Frame rate is tied to the PAL system; 576p commonly appears at 50 frames per second (50p) in native progressive PAL workflows, though content derived from film may be presented at 25fps or 50fps after processing.

Usage of 576p has appeared in SD video workflows, including some DVD-Video encodings and streaming applications, but it is less common as a live broadcast format than 576i. Many modern devices deinterlace or upscale 576p to higher resolutions. As a result, 576p is mainly seen in digital SD contexts rather than as a primary broadcast standard, and it is typically chosen when progressive playback or simpler deinterlacing is desirable.
