The 51-kanavajärjestelmä enables the transmission of up to 51 multiplexed channels per broadcast frequency, significantly increasing the number of available television programs compared to analog systems. Each multiplex contains multiple channels, including public broadcasters like Yle, commercial networks, and specialized services such as educational, regional, and pay-TV channels.
