45019 is a steam locomotive that was part of British Railways' (BR) ex-LMS Stanier Class 5 4-6-0 fleet. These locomotives, often nicknamed "Black Fives," were a versatile design built between 1934 and 1951. The Class 5 was known for its power and reliability, making it suitable for a wide range of duties across the BR network, including freight and passenger services.

Locomotive 45019 was built at the Crewe Works in 1946. Like other members of its class, it featured a 4-6-0 wheel arrangement, meaning it had four leading wheels, six driving wheels, and zero trailing wheels. This configuration provided a good balance of adhesion for hauling loads and stability for higher speeds. The "Black Five" locomotives were designed by William Stanier, who was then Chief Mechanical Engineer for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS), and continued to be built under British Railways.

Following its construction, 45019 entered service with British Railways. It operated for many years, covering many miles across the country. The "Black Fives" were eventually withdrawn from mainline service as diesel and electric traction became more prevalent. 45019 was withdrawn in 1967 and subsequently scrapped, like the majority of its class. However, many "Black Fives" were preserved, and a significant number remain operational today on heritage railways, celebrated for their enduring legacy in British railway history.
