2-Hydroxydesipramine is a metabolite of desipramine, a tricyclic antidepressant. Desipramine itself is used to treat depression and other mood disorders. When desipramine is taken by the body, it is processed in the liver, and one of the resulting compounds is 2-hydroxydesipramine. This metabolite is formed through a process called hydroxylation, which adds a hydroxyl group to the desipramine molecule.
The pharmacological activity of 2-hydroxydesipramine is generally considered to be less potent than that of its
