Key features of 2G included digital voice encryption, allowing for more secure calls compared to its analog predecessor. It also enabled the transmission of data, leading to the introduction of services like SMS (Short Message Service) for text messaging and MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) for sending picture messages. While data speeds were slow by today's standards, these early data capabilities were revolutionary for their time.

2G networks allowed for greater capacity, meaning more users could connect simultaneously. This was achieved through digital modulation techniques and efficient spectrum usage. The transition to 2G also paved the way for international roaming, as GSM was adopted globally, making it possible to use mobile phones in many different countries.

Although newer generations like 3G, 4G, and 5G offer much higher speeds and advanced features, 2G networks continued to operate in many regions for an extended period. They were often maintained to support legacy devices, machine-to-machine (M2M) communication, and as a fallback network for basic voice services. The ongoing process of 2G network shutdowns in various countries reflects the industry's shift towards more advanced technologies.
