A 20FußReefer is a standard 20-foot refrigerated intermodal container designed to transport temperature-sensitive cargo. Also known as a 20-foot reefer, it combines a rigid steel frame with insulated walls and a built-in refrigeration unit to maintain a controlled interior environment during sea, rail, and road transport. It is widely used in the global cold chain for perishables such as fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy, seafood, and some pharmaceuticals.

Dimensions and capacity are based on the ISO 20-foot container specification. External length is about six meters, with a width near 2.4 meters and a height that is standard or high-cube (roughly 2.6 to 2.9 meters). Tare weight typically ranges around two to two and a half tonnes, while maximum gross weight is set by the container class, generally in the mid- to high-tens of tonnes, leaving a net payload in the usable range for refrigerating goods. Design features include an insulated cargo area, weatherproof doors with seals, and cooling coils connected to the refrigeration unit.

Refrigeration and power: the unit provides temperature control and often supports a wide range of setpoints, commonly from sub-zero up to around 25°C, with some models capable of deeper freezing. The refrigeration system is powered by electricity from shore power, ship’s power, or on-board diesel generators, enabling continuous cooling during loading, transit, and unloading.

Usage and considerations: 20-foot reefers enable intermodal shipments of perishable goods and are favored for smaller-volume or time-sensitive loads. They require regular maintenance, including insulation integrity checks and refrigerant system service, and must comply with international shipping and cold-chain standards.
