It was part of the W201 model series, often referred to as the "Baby Benz" due to its smaller size compared to other Mercedes-Benz models of the era. The 190E2 was designed to be a more affordable entry into the Mercedes-Benz lineup, appealing to a younger demographic and those seeking a premium compact car.

It featured a rear-wheel-drive platform and a range of four-cylinder and six-cylinder gasoline engines, as well as diesel options.
