1850-luvulla is a Finnish term meaning the decade from 1850 to 1859. In Finnish historiography it is used to refer to a period of rapid modernization, geopolitical realignments, and social change across continents. The decade’s events varied by region but shared broader processes such as industrialization, state formation, and imperial competition.

Key developments occurred in North America, Europe, and Asia. In the United States, the Compromise of 1850, California’s admission as a free state, and the Fugitive Slave Act reflected intensifying conflicts over slavery; in 1854 the Kansas–Nebraska Act intensified sectional strife. In Europe, the Crimean War (1853–1856) shifted power relationships and exposed weaknesses in traditional empires; in 1859 the Second Italian War of Independence advanced Italian unification.
