12V stopcontact is a 12-volt direct current (DC) power outlet used to supply low-power devices in vehicles, caravans, boats and other similar installations. It is common in Dutch-language contexts and serves as an alternative to household mains for portable equipment.

The most familiar form is the cigarette lighter style receptacle, a cylindrical socket with a central positive contact and an outer ground shell. The matching plug (the cigarette lighter or a device’s DC power plug) connects to this socket to draw power. In addition, many caravans and boats use fixed 12V outlets with a weatherproof or locking design. While the cigarette lighter socket remains the dominant form in cars, fixed 12V outlets are common in recreational and marine applications.

Electrical characteristics typically involve a nominal 12V supply with current ratings that commonly range from around 10 to 15 amperes, depending on the installation. Vehicle electrical systems usually operate at about 12.0 to 14.4 volts (the latter when the engine charging system is active). Not all 12V outlets are interchangeable with all devices; devices often require a compatible plug and a fuse or protection in the circuit.

Use cases include powering portable chargers, dash cameras, GPS units, cooling devices for camping, LED lighting, and other small accessories via appropriate adapters. Because 12V outlets are part of a vehicle’s electrical system, proper wiring, fusing, and adherence to electrical safety guidelines are important to prevent short circuits or fire hazards.
