Uksikioonidest is an Estonian term that translates to "lone bees" or "solitary bees." Unlike social bees that live in colonies, solitary bees live independently. Each female bee constructs and provisions her own nest, typically in tunnels within the soil, hollow stems, or pre-existing cavities. They do not have a queen, worker bees, or a hive structure.

The life cycle of a solitary bee usually involves the female excavating a nest, then creating a series of cells within it. She deposits pollen and nectar into each cell, lays an egg on top, and then seals the cell. This process is repeated until the nest is full. The egg hatches into a larva, which consumes the provisions and pupates, eventually emerging as an adult bee. The adult bee then exits the nest, mates, and the female begins the cycle anew.

Solitary bees are crucial pollinators, playing a significant role in the reproduction of many wild plants and agricultural crops. They are generally docile and less likely to sting than social bees, as they do not have a colony to defend. Many species are active during specific times of the year, contributing to pollination throughout the growing season. Their solitary nature means they are often overlooked compared to their more famous social counterparts.
