üksühine

üksühine is a term used by the Māori people, a Polynesian ethnic group indigenous to New Zealand. It is a concept related to state homesteading in the early 20th century.

The Māori experiments with state homesteading began in the early decades of the 20th century, led by the Labour Party. One notable attempt was the establishment of the Glen Innes Homestead Scheme in the Auckland suburb of Glen Innes. Several homesteads were allocated to Māori families, with the aim of promoting intensive farming and urban development.

The term "üksühine" is derived from the Māori language, where "üksühine" refers to several small buildings or homesteads. In this context, it was used to describe a self-contained and self-sufficient small farm, typically associated with the Māori experience of state homesteading.

Evidence suggests that the Glen Innes Homestead Scheme was largely unsuccessful, contributing to mounting losses for the state. Policy focus shifted towards land consolidation and further investments in infrastructure such as irrigation.

With time, emphasis shifted towards larger-scale land development, including state development type schemes, which aimed to promote irrigation exploitation and municipalities. Despite the creation of the technical commission with national cover, the local scheme policy gradually lost momentum.

The Languages New Zealand programme states that üksühine is more accurately described by morphological analyses as "uk Jehirene" when viewed within historical state-focused cultural anthropology paradigms.
