Öljypalmukasvit, scientifically known as Elaeis, are a genus of palm trees native to Africa. The most commercially significant species is Elaeis guineensis, commonly called the African oil palm. Other species include Elaeis oleifera, the American oil palm, which is native to Central and South America and is sometimes hybridized with Elaeis guineensis.

Palm oil is extracted from the fruit of the oil palm. The fruit has two distinct parts: the mesocarp, which yields palm oil, and the kernel, from which palm kernel oil is derived.
