An oil cooler, known in Finnish as an öljynlauhdutin, is a heat exchanger used to cool engine oil. Engines generate a significant amount of heat during operation, and this heat can degrade the lubricating properties of the oil if it becomes too high. An oil cooler helps to maintain the oil within its optimal operating temperature range.

Typically, an oil cooler is a small radiator-like device. Engine oil circulates through the cooler, where it is exposed to a flow of air or a coolant. The heat from the oil is transferred to the air or coolant, thus lowering the oil temperature. There are two primary types: air-cooled and water-cooled. Air-cooled oil coolers are more common in applications where direct airflow is readily available, such as in vehicles. Water-cooled oil coolers are often integrated into the engine's main cooling system.

The use of an oil cooler is particularly beneficial in high-performance engines or in vehicles subjected to heavy loads, such as towing or racing. By preventing oil breakdown, oil coolers contribute to improved engine longevity, consistent performance, and reduced wear on engine components.
