An õlitusüsteem, or lubrication system, is a crucial component in many mechanical devices, particularly engines and complex machinery. Its primary function is to reduce friction between moving parts, thereby preventing wear and tear, dissipating heat, and cleaning away debris. Without an effective õlitusüsteem, components would quickly overheat, seize, and fail.

The basic principle involves circulating a lubricant, typically oil, to the areas requiring lubrication. This can be achieved through various methods. Wet sump systems, common in many automotive engines, store oil in a reservoir at the bottom of the engine. A pump then draws oil from this sump and distributes it under pressure to critical components like bearings, camshafts, and pistons. In dry sump systems, the oil is stored in a separate tank, and scavenge pumps remove oil from the crankcase to prevent it from accumulating and affecting engine performance.

Other types of õlitusüsteemid exist for different applications. Splash lubrication relies on the motion of parts to splash oil onto surfaces. Force-feed systems use a pump to deliver oil directly to specific points. Greasing systems, which use a thicker lubricant, are often employed in heavy machinery or bearings that experience high loads and infrequent movement. The design and complexity of an õlitusüsteem are tailored to the specific needs of the machine it serves, ensuring optimal performance and longevity.
