Äänentallennusmedia, or sound recording media, refers to the physical substances or formats used to capture and store sound. These media have evolved significantly over time, moving from early mechanical methods to sophisticated digital technologies.

The earliest forms of sound recording media were mechanical. Cylinders, often made of wax or celluloid, were coated with a spiral groove. A stylus attached to a diaphragm vibrated with sound waves, etching corresponding patterns into the groove as the cylinder rotated. The recorded sound could then be reproduced by tracing the groove with a stylus.

Later, magnetic tape became a dominant sound recording medium. This flexible plastic tape was coated with a magnetic material. Sound waves were converted into electrical signals, which then modulated the magnetic field of the tape as it passed over a recording head. The magnetic patterns stored on the tape represented the original sound. Various formats of magnetic tape emerged, including reel-to-reel, cassette tapes, and 8-track tapes.

Optical media, such as vinyl records, also played a crucial role. These discs featured a continuous spiral groove etched onto their surface. Similar to cylinders, a stylus traced this groove, reproducing the sound. Vinyl records offered a more durable and higher-fidelity alternative to early cylinders.

In the digital age, optical media like CDs (Compact Discs) and DVDs (Digital Versatile Discs) became prevalent. Sound was converted into binary data (a series of 0s and 1s) and stored as microscopic pits and lands on the disc's surface. Lasers were used to read this data for playback. More recently, solid-state storage, such as flash memory found in USB drives and memory cards, has become the primary medium for digital audio storage, offering portability and high capacity.
