Äänenmenetys, also known as hearing loss, refers to a partial or complete inability to hear sound in one or both ears. It can range from mild to profound and affect people of all ages. The causes ofäänenmenetys are diverse and can include genetic factors, aging, exposure to loud noises, certain medical conditions, infections, and the use of ototoxic medications.

There are three main types of äänenmenetys. Conductive hearing loss occurs when sound waves are blocked from entering the outer or middle ear, preventing them from reaching the inner ear. This can be caused by earwax blockage, fluid in the middle ear, or damage to the eardrum or middle ear bones. Sensorineural hearing loss is the most common type and results from damage to the inner ear (cochlea) or the auditory nerve pathways. Age-related hearing loss (presbycusis) and noise-induced hearing loss are typically sensorineural. Mixed hearing loss is a combination of both conductive and sensorineural components.

Symptoms of äänenmenetys can vary depending on the severity and type. Common signs include difficulty understanding speech, especially in noisy environments, needing to turn up the volume on television or radio, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), and feeling that others are mumbling. Early diagnosis and intervention are important to manage äänenmenetys and its impact on communication, social interaction, and overall quality of life. Treatment options may include hearing aids, cochlear implants, assistive listening devices, and medical or surgical interventions depending on the underlying cause.
