Õunasortide

Õunasortide refers to the diverse range of apple cultivars grown around the world. Apples, scientifically known as Malus domestica, are cultivated for their fruit, which can vary dramatically in size, color, flavor, texture, and intended use. These variations are the result of centuries of selective breeding and natural cross-pollination.

The characteristics of an apple cultivar are determined by its genetic makeup. This leads to a wide spectrum of apple types, from those that are exceptionally sweet and crisp, ideal for eating fresh, to those that are tart and firm, better suited for baking or cider production. Colors can range from vibrant reds and yellows to green and even striped patterns.

Some of the most well-known Õunasortide include Red Delicious, known for its bright red skin and mild flavor; Granny Smith, a tart and firm green apple; Gala, a sweet and crisp variety; and Fuji, a very sweet and juicy apple. Beyond these widely recognized types, there are thousands of less common or heirloom cultivars, each with its unique history and traits.
