Õmblusmasina

Õmblusmasin is the Estonian word for sewing machine. A sewing machine is a machine used to stitch fabric and other materials together with thread. Sewing machines were invented during the first Industrial Revolution to decrease the amount of manual seamstress work required in commercial clothing production. Prior to the invention of the sewing machine, all clothing and cloth bags were sewn by hand.

The first functioning sewing machine was invented by French tailor Barthélemy Thimonnier in 1830. His machine used a chain stitch and was a significant improvement over hand sewing. However, it was not widely adopted. Later, in the mid-19th century, American inventor Elias Howe developed a more practical sewing machine that used a lockstitch. His design became the basis for many subsequent sewing machines. Isaac Singer further improved upon Howe's design and his company became the largest manufacturer of sewing machines in the world.

Modern sewing machines are available in a wide range of types, from basic mechanical models to advanced computerized machines. They can perform various functions such as straight stitching, zigzag stitching, buttonhole making, and even embroidery. Sewing machines are used in both domestic and industrial settings. For home use, they are popular among hobbyists and for mending and alterations. In the textile industry, sewing machines are essential for mass production of clothing and other textile products. The development of the sewing machine revolutionized the garment industry, making clothing more affordable and accessible.
