Épithéliales refers to tissues that form the outer covering of the body and line the internal organs and cavities. These tissues, also known as epithelium, are composed of cells that are tightly packed together, forming a continuous sheet. Epithelial tissues have several key functions, including protection, secretion, absorption, and filtration. They play a crucial role in maintaining the body's internal environment and in its interactions with the external world.

There are various types of epithelial tissues, categorized based on the number of cell layers and the shape of the cells. Simple epithelium consists of a single layer of cells, while stratified epithelium has multiple layers. Cell shapes include squamous (flat), cuboidal (cube-shaped), and columnar (tall and rectangular). For example, simple squamous epithelium lines blood vessels and air sacs in the lungs, facilitating diffusion. Simple cuboidal epithelium is found in kidney tubules and glands, involved in secretion and absorption. Simple columnar epithelium lines the digestive tract, aiding in absorption and secretion. Stratified squamous epithelium forms the outer layer of the skin, providing protection.

Epithelial cells are specialized for their specific functions. For instance, cells in the lining of the small intestine have microvilli to increase surface area for absorption. Cells in glands can produce and secrete various substances, such as hormones, mucus, or enzymes. Epithelial tissues are constantly regenerating, with cell division occurring at the base of the tissue. This continuous renewal is essential for maintaining the integrity and function of these protective and functional linings. Damage to epithelial tissues can compromise these functions, making them susceptible to infection or impaired absorption.
