Ångturbinprocesser are thermodynamic cycles used to generate mechanical work from heat, most commonly in power plants. The fundamental principle involves heating water to produce high-pressure steam, which then expands through a turbine. This expansion causes the turbine blades to rotate, driving a generator to produce electricity. After passing through the turbine, the steam is condensed back into water and returned to the boiler, completing the cycle.

The most prevalent ångturbinprocess is the Rankine cycle. This cycle consists of four main stages: pumping the working fluid (water) to a high pressure, heating it in a boiler to generate steam, expanding the steam through a turbine, and condensing the steam back to a liquid. Variations of the Rankine cycle exist to improve efficiency, such as reheat and regeneration. Reheating involves expanding the steam partially through the turbine, then sending it back to the boiler for further heating before continuing expansion. Regeneration preheats the feedwater by extracting steam from various stages of the turbine.

Other, less common, ångturbinprocesser include the Kalina cycle, which uses a mixture of ammonia and water as the working fluid, and combined cycles, which integrate gas turbines with steam turbines to achieve higher overall efficiencies. The choice of process depends on factors such as available heat source, desired power output, and economic considerations.
