Äänihuuletulehdus

Äänihuuletulehdus, also known as laryngitis, is an inflammation of the vocal cords. This condition can affect people of all ages and is most commonly caused by viral infections, such as the common cold or flu. Other causes include bacterial infections, overuse of the voice, allergies, irritants like smoke or pollution, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Symptoms of äänihuuletulehdus typically include hoarseness or a change in voice quality, a sore throat, dry cough, and a feeling of tickling or irritation in the throat. In more severe cases, individuals may experience difficulty speaking or a complete loss of voice. Fever may also be present, especially if the inflammation is due to an infection.

Diagnosis is usually made based on the patient's symptoms and a physical examination. In some instances, a doctor may use a laryngoscope to visualize the vocal cords. Treatment for äänihuuletulehdus depends on the underlying cause. Viral laryngitis often resolves on its own with rest and supportive care, which includes avoiding irritants, staying hydrated, and resting the voice. For bacterial infections, antibiotics may be prescribed. If GERD is the cause, medications to reduce stomach acid are recommended. Chronic hoarseness or voice changes that persist for more than a few weeks warrant medical attention to rule out more serious conditions.
