ületäita
ületäita is a term originating from the Finnic linguistic tradition, specifically attached to the regional dialects of the southern Ostrobothnia area in Finland. Traditionally the word is used in oral folklore to describe a figure that embodies protective motherhood; it is often interchanged with the more common Finnish term äiti meaning mother. The literal meaning of ületäita is typically interpreted as “high mother” or “noble mother” in the local parlance, denoting a revered female guardian or spirit that watches over livestock and households.
The earliest written references appear in the 1867 collection of Ostrobothnian folk tales compiled by J. F.
