**Ühtlustuste** (from the Estonian words *ühtlus* meaning "unity" and *-ust-* a suffix indicating a state or process) refers to the cultural, social, and political movements and efforts in Estonia aimed at fostering national unity and cohesion, particularly during periods of significant change or external pressure. The concept emerged prominently in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as Estonia sought to define its identity amid Russian imperial rule and later during the struggle for independence.

During the Estonian National Awakening (*Vabadussõda*, 1918–1920), ühtlustuste played a crucial role in mobilizing diverse ethnic and regional groups under a shared Estonian identity. Efforts included promoting a common language, education, and cultural norms while accommodating regional differences. After gaining independence in 1920, the concept continued to influence policies aimed at balancing unity with pluralism, though internal divisions persisted, particularly between urban and rural populations.

In the Soviet era (1940–1991), ühtlustuste took on new dimensions as Estonians navigated forced assimilation while preserving national identity. The term also became associated with resistance movements, such as the *Kodukaitse* (Home Guard), which maintained cultural continuity despite Soviet repression.
