Övergångsmetal, or "transition metal" in English, refers to elements that are found in the d-block of the periodic table, specifically groups 3 through 12. These elements share a range of characteristic properties that distinguish them from other types of elements. A key feature of transition metals is their ability to form multiple stable oxidation states, meaning they can lose varying numbers of electrons when forming chemical compounds. This ability contributes to their diverse chemical behavior and their widespread use in catalysis.

Another defining characteristic is the presence of incompletely filled d orbitals in their elemental form or in their common ions. This electronic configuration is responsible for many of their unique properties, such as their often vibrant colors in solution and their magnetic properties. Transition metals are crucial in many industrial and biological processes. They are widely used as catalysts in chemical reactions due to their ability to readily change oxidation states and their capacity to bind to reactants. Examples include iron in the Haber-Bosch process for ammonia production and platinum in catalytic converters for automobiles. In biology, many essential enzymes rely on transition metals like iron, copper, and zinc for their function. Their ability to form complex ions with ligands is also a significant aspect of their chemistry, playing roles in areas from metallurgy to medicine.
