Övergångsbandet, meaning "transition band" in Swedish, is a concept in solid-state physics and materials science that describes the region of energy levels where electrons cannot exist within a solid material. In a crystal lattice, the electrons are confined to specific energy bands. These bands are separated by forbidden energy gaps. The transition band is essentially this forbidden gap, where no allowed electron states are found.

The existence and width of these transition bands are crucial in determining the electrical properties of a material. Materials with a large energy gap are insulators, as electrons require a significant amount of energy to jump from the valence band (where they are bound) to the conduction band (where they can move freely and conduct electricity). Materials with a small energy gap are semiconductors, where some electrons can be excited across the gap with moderate energy input, leading to conductivity. Metals, on the other hand, have no transition band; their valence and conduction bands overlap or are partially filled, allowing for easy electron movement and high conductivity. The study of these bands and gaps is fundamental to understanding and engineering electronic devices.
